IT-TLR Latch Mounting Instructions or Cooler Lid Fastening Directions
The early model Icey Tek coolers utilized a very inferior cooler lid latch system. Those models had a white bungy cord system (IT-TLR) that lasted but a very short time. The IT-TLR latches are no longer being manufactured. The new models of YETI (formerly Icey-Tek) coolers (Renamed by Waterloo distributors in Driftwood Texas) utilize a Lid Latch system called the IT-TLR.
The new latches are made from flexible, black thermoplastic elastomer material and are enhanced with a variety of additional features and options to provide smooth trouble-free performance under real-world conditions. The IT-TLR system enjoys great longevity, and is the perfect replacement for the old system. Useful Diagram.
1. Obtain the following equipment:
- A block of scrap wood (i.e.; piece of 2x4) to be used as a backing to drill a hole in (Part B) Cordless electric drill or equivalent
- Medium Phillips screwdriver
- Fine point Sharpie marker or equivalent
2. Remove old latches and save 2 of their mounting screws.
3. Determine where new black thermoplastic elastomer latches will be mounted.
4. Remove contents from new latch package and verify the following contents:
6 SS screws (Part A)
2 small black plastic single screw hole "Male Studs" (Part B)
2 T-handled rubber " Black Thermoplastic Elastomer Straps" (Part C)
2 dual screw black plastic "Elastic Strap Clamps" (Part D)
5. Ensure both (Part C)s are mated to (Part D)s (should already be that way).
6. Prepare (Part B)s for mounting as follows:
a.
Using the 3/16" drill bit, drill a hole about ½" deep in the scrap wood.
b.
Insert the protruding stud of (Part B) into the hole drilled in Step 5.
c.
Drill a 3/16" hole through the corner (left corner or right is your
preference) of (Part B) next to the protruding stud.
d.
Repeat Steps 6.a. through 6.c. for the remaining (Part B).
7. Prepare your cooler for (Part B) mounting as follows (see "FIGURE "A" for hole
pattern):
a.
On the lowermost lip of the cooler, mark a spot 3/16" below the
uppermost lip of the cooler, on the area you want to mount the first latch.
(see "FIGURE "A" for hole pattern).
b.
Using the 3/16" drill bit, carefully drill a pilot hole ¼" deep at the spot
marked in Step 7.a.
c.
Insert the protruding stud of (Part B) into the pilot hole drilled in Step 7.b
and align square for drilling the screw alignment holes.
d.
Using (Part B) as a template and the 3/64" drill bit, carefully drill a hole
about 1" deep into the cooler at the space below the factory drilled 3/16"
hole of (Part B).
e.
Repeat the process in Step 7.d. for the hole drilled in Step 6.c. of (Part B).
f.
Repeat Steps 7.a through 7.e for the remaining (Part B).
8. Mount each (Part B) as follows:
a.
Insert a (Part A) SS screw into the hole drilled in Step 7.d.
b.
Insert 1 of the saved screws, from the old latch mount, into the hole
drilled in Step 7.e.
CAUTION: Over-tightening the screw in the following step will strip the threads of the soft plastic cooler.
c.
Tighten the screws until the screws bottom. DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN as
the plastic of cooler will strip.
d.
Repeat Steps 8.a through 8.c for the remaining (Part B).
9. Mount (Part D)s as follows:
a.
Ensure cooler lid is firmly closed.
b.
Attach (Part D) to (Part B).
c.
Using gentle, but firm, stretching pressure (not enough pressure to actually visibly
stretch) on (Part C), align and mark the uppermost hole to be drilled to attach
(Part D).
d.
Drill a 3/64" hole, about 1" deep, at the spot marked in Step 9.c.
e.
Insert a (Part A) screw through the uppermost hole of (Part D) in the hole drilled in
Step 9.d.
f.
Plumb the (Part D).
g.
Tighten the screw inserted in Step 9.e.
h.
Drill a 3/64" hole, about 1" deep, for the remaining hole of (Part D).
i.
Insert and tighten a (Part A) screw into the hole drilled in Step 9.h.
j.
Repeat Steps 9.a through 9.i for the remaining (Part D).
This completes the Icey Tek IT-TLR Latch Mounting Instructions. Now wasn't that fun?
